Times of Change

What challenges does Jack Smith face as a soldier in Vietnam? (a bulleted list is fine)
- very young
- No news coverage on the war
- there hadnt been a war since korea
- only some of his sergents had combat experience

How does Smith’s attitude toward war change?
- At the begining he treated it as a joke, like goofing off as privates and other things. But he came to his senses and relized he could be killed.

This song by Country Joe and the Fish became one of the first protest songs of the Vietnam Era. Read the lyrics to the song, and then respond to the following:

What is the song asking the “big strong men to do”?
They are the soldiers and there asking them to fight for the U.S. because were in a jamm

… the “generals” to do?
To end communism
… “Wall Street” to do?
To bring in more money
… “mothers” to do?
Send there boys to vietnam
Write down four specific lines from the song that display sarcasm, cynicism, or anti-war sentiment.
Anti - War -
1. To have your come home in a box
2. Whoopee were all gonna die
Sarcasm -
3. Were gonna have a whole lot of fun
4. By supplying the army with tools of trade

What do these two poems and the article say about the impact of the war on the native Vietnamese? Can you think of any other ways in which the war will impact the native Vietnamese?

They were hurt by the Vietcong and were wrongfully killed by american troops. This war will destroy there native homeland.
